You’ve probably heard it thousands of times, but music theory is one of the most important things musicians rely on all the time. Whether it be improvising in a rehearsal studio, performing live, recording in a studio, or creating new songs, the knowledge of music theory can either reward or stifle your efforts.
There is a big catch, though – most kids and teens perceive music theory lessons as boring. Children taking guitar lessons can’t wait to rock out to iconic tunes, shred, play solos, and be a part of a real band, not listen to why note A sounds similar to note B in a chord C.
Welcome to The Music Box where we put the fun back into music theory. Our students learn to appreciate the value of theoretical knowledge and how to harness it when playing, performing, recording, and practicing. As Tampa, Florida’s premier guitar school, we’d like to show you how our guitar coaches make music theory lessons engaging and entertaining for children.
What is Music Theory and Why is it Important?
Music theory describes what can be performed on a guitar, as well as explains the relationship between different notes, chords, scales, and guitar techniques. The importance of music theory for a guitar player can be likened to the importance of a good vocabulary for a writer, or the understanding of relationships between different colors for a painter.
The broader the understanding, the more colorful the sonic “palette” becomes. Guitar players have a deeper well of knowledge to draw from, which they can rely on when writing music, playing music, or recording music – the importance of a good instrument wanes since guitarists versed in music theory know how to find a good tone and execute various techniques on any stringed piece of wood.
The Music Box Method: Comprehensive, Entertaining, Educative
Some of the most seasoned guitarists are proud to call The Music Box their home. When we began our search for the best guitar coaches, we were looking for professionals who knew their instruments and knew how to work with children.
The Music Box’s approach to teaching music theory to guitar players is perfectly balanced. Knowing that most kids don’t have long attention spans and get bored easily when listening to lessons they don’t like, our coaches strive to make each lesson full of fun activities that all students can enjoy.
We don’t neglect the educational aspects of teaching and are committed to bringing all students a well-rounded curriculum comprised of lessons they’ll remember and keep using as long as they’re interested in music as a whole.
Finally, The Music Box guitar coaches leverage their first-hand experiences to create an action-packed, enjoyable learning atmosphere by telling stories, explaining difficult music theory concepts through relatable songs, and more.
Coaching & Music Theory
One of the reasons why our students keep returning to The Music Box is that our staff comprises guitar coaches – not professors, teachers, or educators. We see kids as children, not merely numbers that are filling the classroom.
Our coaches work with each student and know their strengths & weaknesses, and know which methods help to accelerate their growth. Some children find chords remarkably difficult; others want to shred but are struggling with arpeggiated scales.
That’s why our coaches work with each student individually to help them break through the plateau. Swing by our TikTok page to see what a day at The Music Box looks like.
We Strive to Make Each Lesson Fun
Compared to guitar teachers who have a set curriculum, The Music Box guitar coaches only follow the roots of any given concept while improvising the rest of the lesson based on how kids react.
At The Music Box, we firmly believe that kids that find our lessons entertaining are the kids that can’t wait to come back.
Keeping our students inspired and motivated is a crucial part of our offering, and we want to channel each flame to burn as brightly as possible so that our students want to pursue their dreams even while they’re learning. Come to The Music Box Instagram page; the happy faces of our students rocking out say it all.
Making Difficult Lessons Simple
Many providers of music lessons purposefully make guitar theory even more complex and convoluted so they can bill you extra hours. The Music Box is the polar opposite of that – we want to teach your child the basics so they can join a band with their fellow classmates as soon as possible.
Chords
Chords are difficult, especially since there are thousands of them. However, we won’t teach your child every chord that ever existed. We’ll stick to the basic ones and introduce a handful of intermediate-level chords necessary to play and craft new songs.
Scales
Scales can sometimes be challenging, but at their core, it’s basic math. Our guitar coaches excel at simplifying scales, arpeggios, and shredding, all of which you can see on our Facebook page.
Melody
Melody is among the most beautiful parts of essential guitar music theory, and our coaches teach it the way it was meant to be taught – through songs our students love the most. All students of music have different hearing and music preferences, so there’s no reason to try and make such a dynamic, alive topic rigid.
Rhythm
Without a good sense of rhythm, everyone would be playing jazz. Fortunately, even this can be taught if the child wants to learn.
Rhythm is best taught when the child is around 4 years old. Youngsters this age clap along to music, tap with their little feet when excited, and exhibit musical affinities. If that describes your child well, you’re more than welcome to come to The Music Box for quality guitar lessons.
