A guitar is more than a tool that musicians use to perform and record songs. It is a vessel for creatively-minded individuals to channel their emotions, thoughts, and experiences.
Many children, teens, and adults fall out of love with their guitars because their teachers never bothered to help them understand what a guitar truly is.
At the Music Box, our coaches take a different approach and are committed to helping each student become closer to their instrument of choice. This is the key to helping beginners tackle the guitar’s steep learning curve, which in turn, gives them a more enjoyable learning experience.
The Music Box: How We Help Kids Learn All About Guitars
Guitars come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Our coaches strive to teach our students the differences between a vintage Fender ‘58, a modern Telecaster, new-age fretless wonders, and nylon-strung planks.
By helping kids and teens understand the construction and design of a guitar, we’re giving them food for thought – a different lens through which they’ll be able to observe and interact with their favorite instrument.
Our coaches are first and foremost guitar players with years of experience on the road, playing venues big and small. Their approach to teaching guitar the Music Box way is what sets us apart from contemporary alternatives – we teach our students not just how to play, but how to care for the guitar, and how to be as creative as possible with it.
Our Best-in-class Gear is not just for Demonstration
Many online music schools and lesson providers have boutique Gibson and Fender guitars, amps, and at least a pair of quality speakers, but their students are rarely if ever, allowed to touch them. These pieces of equipment are bought either for show or for the teachers to play while kids have to use rusty guitars or even bring their own.
The Music Box is outfitted with top-of-the-line music instruments and gear, and we’re thrilled whenever we see the fascination in our students after they discover that the cool sounds that just came out of the amp were of their own doing.
Soft Necks & Playable Frets
The first encounter with a guitar is a pivotal moment in a child’s musical journey. If it plays well and sounds good, the child will likely want to explore the guitar from head to tail. By doing so, the youngster will become more familiar with the instrument, which may be an invaluable help in future lessons and hopefully, a career in the music industry.
On another hand, it is easy for children to form a negative opinion about the entire world of guitars after one bad experience. Big, bulky guitars with huge frets, cumbersome bodies, and oversized frets are difficult for adults to play on, let alone children and their small fingers.
When we began building our arsenal of guitars, we were focused on models that have smooth necks, tight fret spacing, and soft fingerboards. In other words, guitars that “play themselves”. The Music Box coaches strive to ensure all of our students have quality tools that work for them, not against them.
Striving to Help Our Students Chase the Perfect Tone
At The Music Box, we understand that many parents simply cannot afford to buy a high-end guitar for a child that may or may not end up liking it. For many children, and especially teens, playing the guitar starts as a hobby, becomes a pastime activity, and ultimately devolves into a chore. That is usually the case when beginner guitarists play on poor-sounding instruments and bad amps.
A good tone inspires every guitarist to play more. Striking a power chord on a quality tube amp and a good-sounding guitar is an addictive sensation that motivates the guitarist, just like a touchdown would inspire a football player.
While many schools and teachers are too focused on traditional curriculum, the Music Box coaches want nothing more than to see their students happy and enjoying what they’re doing. Finding and enjoying good tones on good guitars is just as important, if not even more important than knowing all the scales and chords in the book.
Quality Guitars & Songwriting at The Music Box
One of the most exquisite sensations a human being can experience is creating something out of thin air that lasts forever. Out of a handful of terms that would fit the bill, creating a new, original song is one of them.
The Music Box is primarily focused on helping our students learn how to play music. We give them insights and strive to help them acquire practical skills that will serve them well in life, and creating original songs is just a part of it.
With our high-quality guitars, our students are jamming all the time, and every once in a while, these improvisation sessions turn into authored tunes.
One of the core processes in our program is coaching the kids on how to write their own songs, and since they’re already equipped with good gear, why not take them to a studio so that their creativity can become timeless?
The Music Box is creating “kid-sized” rock and roll bands; helmed by our coaches, these bands get to play together, and even perform in real venues in front of real audiences. Once they’ve gelled together nicely, we’re bringing them into the studio, teaching them how recording equipment works, and at the end of it all, they’ll have their own songs to show to family and friends.
